Dr. Beatrice Darko Obiri is a Chief Research Scientist (Socio-economics) and the Head of the Forest Economics and Marketing Division, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (CSIR-FORIG).
She is also a Senior Lecturer in Natural Resource Economics & Bio-Product Marketing at the CSIR-College of Science and Technology, affiliated to the University of Cape Coast. She holds a PhD. in Agricultural Ecology (Economics) from Bangor University, Wales, UK. MSc. Agroforestry from University of Aberdeen, UK, and BSc. (Hons.) Agriculture (Economics & Farm Management) from KNUST, Ghana. She is a former Commonwealth Professional Fellow of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, UK and a European Mundus Sutrofor Scholar.
She has received several other awards including Overseas Development Assistance Shared Scholarship (ODASS) and DFID, NRSP funding for her MSc. and PhD studies in the UK as well as the University of Missouri Incentive Fellowship and DSE Germany fellowship for professional development in the USA and Netherlands respectively.
Dr. Obiri has been the team lead and/or member in the execution of over 50 local and international funded multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and development projects and consultancies in agriculture, forestry/natural resource management, environment and related fields. She has worked as a consultant for several international and local organizations including INBAR China & West Africa/, COWI/FOREST TRENDS Denmark, International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) Japan, International Food, and Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) USA, USAID, DFID, SNV-Netherlands, FAO, UNIDO, UNESCO, UNDP, IUCN, African Forest Forum (AFF), World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF-CIFOR), Tropenbos International and Ghana, Ghana Forestry Commission, FoRM Ghana Company Limited among others.
Her strength lies in her experience in conducting both qualitative and quantitative research across the human dimensions and biophysical aspects of these disciplines to guide economic and policy decision making. Her specific research experiences cover conducting baseline & feasibility studies; economics of production systems particularly forest and agro-based enterprises financial/cost-benefit analysis, farm forestry and crop budgeting. Others include multi-stakeholder engagement approaches, forest dependency and livelihoods analyses; forest and agricultural commodity supply and value chain analyses, marketing and trade; agro-ecological knowledge analysis, bio-energy and climate change assessment; landscape restoration, project monitoring and evaluation as well as farming systems research especially participatory technology development, adoption and impact assessment. Her recent research focused on the economics of modified taungya, shea plantations, sylvopastoral intensification, woodfuel and woody fruit tree production in the Savannah and Transition landscapes of Ghana; Stakeholder engagement for community-based resources management; Enhancing tree-based food and energy systems in coastal mangrove-based livelihood systems; Native germplasm and bamboo value chain analyses, Trade and marketing of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) among others. Dr. Obiri has over 150 publications including 29 journal papers. She has attended and made presentations in over 50 local & international workshops and conferences.
Dr Obiri is a reviewer of international and local journals. She is an external thesis assessor for Graduate Schools of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), University of Life Sciences, Norway and Makerere University Business School, Uganda. She also supervises graduate (Masters & PhD) students’ theses from both local and international universities. She is a member of various committees within and outside the CSIR and affiliated to the Research Staff Association of CSIR, Ghana Association of Agricultural Economists (GAAE) among others
