Forest Improvement and Productivity Division

This programme seeks to increase forest cover, improve the productivity of forest plantations and promote integration of trees on farms and degraded landscapes, while building resilience to climate change. Priority areas include:
- Rehabilitation and restoration of degraded landscapes
- Forest plantations and silviculture
- Agroforestry and food security
- Germplasm supply and distribution system
- Genetics, tree breeding, biotechnology, domestication and conservation
- Forest health surveillance (pests and diseases)
- Climate change and forest productivity
- Sustainable wood fuel production

TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE SMALL-SCALE WOODLOT MANAGEMENT FOR BIOENERGY AND LIVELIHOOD IMPROVEMENT
Specific objectives are to:
Develop a tailored curriculum to train charcoal producers and firewood sellers on improved strategies for sustainable woodlot management
Equip participants with knowledge of appropriate seedling nursery management and silvicultural techniques.
Equip farmers with knowledge of essential bookkeeping and financial management skills and improved marketing strategies to increase profitability.
Establish local partnerships to drive continued research and innovation in sustainable woodlot management.

CONSERVATION OF THE CRITICALLY ENDANGERED AUBREGRINIA TAIENSIS TREE IN GHANA.
Aubregrinia taiensis, is critically endangered tree species with very restricted distribution in Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire. CSIR-FORIG has been working collaboratively with partners in both countries since 2019, with the support of BGCI and funding from Foundation Franklinia, to save the tree from the brink of extinction.
COORDINATING AND SUPPORTING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GHANA’S THREATENED TREES CONSERVATION ACTION PLAN.
The project is aimed at supporting conservations actions, and ensuring proper coordination between all actors involved in the implementation of the Conservation Action Plan (CAP) for Ghana’s threatened trees.
